PIONEER AWARDS 2000 IS RHYTHM & BLUES FOUNDATION'S MOST SUCCESSFUL FUND RAISER

Pioneer Awards 2000 raised $283,000, making it the most successful fund-raiser in the eleven year history of the event, it was announced today by Jerry Butler, Chairman of the Board of the Foundation.

'"We are very pleased with this year's financial results," stated Bob Wade, Interim Executive Director of the Foundation. "Not only was it a most memorable event, it generated additional monies to fund our programs in support of medical and other emergency needs of R&B legends. This also helps ensure that planning can go forward for Pioneer Awards 2001."

Generous sponsorships by Berry Gordy, Founder of Motown Records, and Tim Olphie, VIBE Records, and a surprise gift announced by Aretha Franklin at the event contributed significantly to the positive financial result.

In addition, Mr. Gordy announced an agreement with the Foundation to establish The Gwendolyn B. Gordy Fuqua Fund, with an initial gift of $750,000 to be administered by the Foundation to provide financial assistance to needy Motown artists of the 60s and 70s.

Topping off the magnanimous spirit of the evening, Stevie Wonder, the Pioneer 2000 Lifetime Achievement Award winner, offered to do a benefit album for the Foundation during the coming year.

The awards program that recognizes the contributions of Rhythm & Blues Artists of the 40s, 50s and 60s with a gala celebration and cash grants to honorees had traditionally been held the day after the Grammy Awards. Pioneer Awards 2000 marked the first time the show was held as a stand-alone event. The benefit this year was held in New York City on September 6 at the Manhattan Center and was sold out, generating the additional income to be used in support of the Foundation's programs.

Fostering wider recognition, financial support and historic and cultural preservation of rhythm and blues artists of the '40s, '50s, and '60s, the Rhythm and Blues Foundation provides emergency funds and services to artists in need
